4. The History of BMI
The index was developed in the early 19th century (circa 1832) by a Belgian statistician, mathematician, and sociologist named Adolphe Quetelet. It was originally called the Quetelet Index.
The Shocking Origin: Quetelet did not invent the index to measure individual health. Instead, he was trying to define the characteristics of the "average man" (l'homme moyen) for population statistics. He explicitly noted that it should not be used to judge individual obesity or health.
In 1972, researcher Ancel Keys renamed it the Body Mass Index and demonstrated that it correlated closely with body fat percentage at a population level. Insurance companies and medical institutions subsequently adopted it due to its simplicity.
5. Crucial Limitations of BMI
While BMI is easy to calculate, it has several massive drawbacks that make it an incomplete metric for individual health:
- It Ignores Muscle vs. Fat: Muscle is about 18% denser than fat. A muscular individual (like an athlete or bodybuilder) may have a high BMI despite having low body fat and excellent health.

- Waist-to-Height Ratio (WHtR): A ratio of your waist size to your height. Keeping your waist measurement to less than half your height (ratio < 0.5) is strongly correlated with a healthy heart.
- Body Fat Percentage: Measured via skinfold calipers, bioelectrical impedance scales, or DEXA scans. This directly isolates adipose fat mass from lean muscle and bone mass.

Do not obsess over your exact BMI number. Instead, view it as one data point among many.
